Spicy Pickle opens today

Last night I got a sneak peek of Billings’ newest eatery, Spicy Pickle.  It opens today and is located at 900 South 24th Street West (kind of across from Shopko).  Spicy Pickle originated in Denver, CO but now has franchise locations in several states and Billings is the newest location.

The official name of the restaurant is “Spicy Pickle Sandwich Company,” but don’t let the name fool you.  There’s much more to the menu than sandwiches.  And the “sandwiches” that they do serve are much different than your usual “subs.”  Spicy Pickle sandwiches are served on delicious ciabatta – and not that tough ciabatta bread that you have to tug a bite off of – super soft ciabatta.  Their deli sandwiches are on fresh baked sourdough or marble breads.  And some of the spreads they use are rather unique too – EVOO (stands for extra virgin olive oil) chipotle mayo, EVOO basil mayo, EVOO sundried tomato mayo all sound delicious to me.  Other ingredients include (of course) the meats – roasted turkey, bacon, chicken, mortadella (yeah, I had to Google that one too), salami; veggies-roasted peppers, fresh corn relish, lettuce tomatoes and more; and even fresh apples on some of the sandwiches. In addition to the sandwiches, Spicy Pickle serves up salads, paninis, flatbread pizzas, soups and wraps.

Last night they hosted a great preview event where they served up sample sizes of the entire menu.  I had a chance to sample the Santa Cruz signature sandwich, one of the franchise’s most popular items with turkey, avocado, fresh corn relish, cheddar, chipotle mayo; the Italian Panini featuring italian meats, provolone, tomatoes, lettuce; the Classico (i.e. pepperoni) pizza; the Napa pizza which had chicken, bacon, sundried tomatoes and spicy ranch sauce;  and of course, the spicy pickles!  It was all delicious and everything tasted fresh.

They’ll also be offering breakfast sandwiches and flatbreads plus cinnamon rolls, bagels, muffins and fruit for the morning crowd.

Spicy Pickle features a nice casual atmosphere.  You order at the counter but there is a great space to sit and enjoy your food.  It’s a higher quality dining experience and fresher menu than a fast food joint but quicker than a “sit-down” restaurant.  I’ll definitely be grabbing some lunch there soon.  For more information you can check out their website: spicypickle.com.
