$5 Lunch at “The Lunch Spot”
My “pay-the-bills-40-hours-a-week” day job is downtown, so I have no shortage of choices for lunch.
I do, however, have a shortage of options because I do not have an extra $70/wk to eat at my beloved Brew Pub every day (different review for a different day). What’s a guy to do? Then it hit me like a ton and a half of bricks: I don’t have to spend $15 each day for lunch. In fact, if I could find a good $5 lunch special, I would be able to go out much more often and throw my guilt away. Problem number one, solved.
Problem number two, then, was to figure out where I could stretch out $5 and get more than three pieces of lettuce and a couple of grape tomatoes.
Here is that solution. Once every couple of weeks I’ll be dishing on some of Billings best $5 lunch meal deals for you to take advantage of. I’ll do the hard work (the research) so you can do the easy work (eating great food at a great price).
My first suggestion is a relatively new location (ok, REALLY new) on Grand Avenue. Don’t feel bad if you missed it, I had to drive around the block a few times to find it as it is located in a house across the street from Senior High. THE LUNCH SPOT on 406 Grand Avenue was opened by Erik Hamilton about a month ago with little fanfare other than some advertising on HOT 101.9 and the construction on the house that the kids from Senior saw. Apparently, it was enough.
“Lunch has been crazy,” said Hamilton. “We’ve been really happy with the soft opening, and now we are ready to go and want everyone to know where they can get a good homemade takeout meal.”
I asked Erik what the best sandwich on the menu was, and he promptly called out for a French dip. He packaged it with a cookie and a drink and I was set. I couldn’t wait to try it, and got back to my office as soon as I could. The verdict? Winner, winner, chicken, er French dip dinner! Lunch.Whatever. Thin sliced roast beef, cheese, fresh cut green peppers and onions, and of course the au jus. Oh the au jus. It is amazing! I don’t know what he puts in it (trade secret), but it adds a completely different dimension to the sandwich that I normally find lacking in other French dips. My office mates were totally jealous, or they would have been, if they had been there while I was eating.
Which brings me to the other important point about THE LUNCH SPOT: it is takeout/delivery only. This is awesome because if you plan it out, you can call it in and pick it up instead of having to wait for an exorbitantly long time in line behind ferociously hungry high schools kids. It is even awesomer (made up word to fit my excitement) if you order for delivery since they offer FREE DELIVERY downtown and to most of Billings. If you’re curious about where they deliver, call and find out.
A $5 menu is no good with only one option on it, so of course THE LUNCH SPOT has plenty, including (but not limited to) three sliders and a soda, burger/chips/soda, six inch sub of the day/chips/soda, Kaiser sandwich of the day/chips/soda, plus any daily feature special they have, which you can call or stop by to find out about. Erik also made a point of letting me know that they open at 7am, so they’ve got you covered if you are a part of the breakfast crowd. They also stay open until 8, so if you get done with a league basketball or soccer game at the Y and want to support something local on your way home, stop in!
Erik and his crew have a great value offering that Billings is lucky to have around, and if you haven’t already, take advantage of it soon!
