Thursday Jazz Sessions at YVBC
A new musical tradition is being cultivated on Thursday evenings at the Garage Pub — Jazz Sessions. Launched by Billings-based musicians Alex Nauman and Parker Brown, this open-mic style evening gives area musicians the opportunity to perform jazz standards or ad lib together, as well as provide patrons with a weekly dose of live jazz music.
Each week, Nauman, Brown, and a roving assortment of musicians take the stage. From horns to saxophone, upright bass to keyboard, sessions differ depending on the musicians that attend.
Brown and Nauman teach music lessons from Allied Music Studios and started Jazz Sessions in part to give students the chance to perform in front of an audience and with other professionals.
“There are many jazz musicians, players, students, listeners and patrons in town who want more opportunities to perform and hang, etc.,” Nauman said. “So Parker and I started this as a way to have fun playing with people we might not get the chance to otherwise, create a learning environment for students, and create a fun hangout for fans, friends and family.”
The sessions also provide the opportunity work on new songs “and remember old ones,” Nauman said. Anyone who wants to play is welcome, and performers should come with tunes ready to play.
Jazz sessions take place from 6 – 8 p.m. weekly on Thursdays at Yellowstone Valley Brewing Co.
