You’ve got to hand it to Lukas Seely.  The ambitious 20-something Billings’ native turned Los Angeles comedian didn’t just move on to bigger and better things and leave his hometown behind.  Instead, he’s brought what he’s learned from his budding career, touring the country performing at comedy events of all sizes, to build the comedy scene right here in Billings.

Each month, Seely brings National touring comedians (many who we’ve scene on TV and in the movies) to perform at Manny’s Sports and Entertainment.  Additionally, he’s been influential in starting open mic events around town to give local aspiring comedians a chance to practice their skills with a live audience.  He’s hosted the Montana Comedy Competition giving the winner of that contest the chance to perform in Hollywood.

And now, he brings to Billings, “The Big Sky International Comedy Competition,” taking place this Thursday through Saturday.  This is no small event that he’s producing.

Twenty-six comedians; many local, many from across the US and a few Canadians, will be broken into 2 teams – Team Seely and Team Auggie (as in Auggie Smith, also a Billings native turned national touring comedian).  Team Seely will perform at Bones Brewing on Thursday night and at Manny’s on Friday night while Team Auggie will perform at Manny’s on Thursday night and Bones on Friday night.  Each comedian in both groups will be scored and ranked from 1-10 at each show.  After the first two nights, the Top 4 from each group will be selected and then move onto the finals on Saturday, Oct. 6th at The Babcock Theater downtown.  That night, a comedian will be crowned the “Winner of The Big Sky International Comedy Competition.”

So…who’s judging?  People who know their comedy…that’s who.  Judges consist of executives who are “in the industry,” including organizations like International Creative Management, The Hollywood Improv, CBS, Nickelodeon, and Disney and more.  You can see the list of judges at this link.

$5,0o0 in prize money is up for grabs for the funniest comedians.

Tickets are $10 for GA and $15 for reserved table seating for the Thursday and Friday night events and $18 for the Finals at the Babcock.  For $50, you can purchase a VIP pass which gets you admission into all 3 nights and venues, plus you get to meet the comedians.  Purchase tickets here.

I for one, hope this event is a huge success and can’t wait to watch it grow year after year!  Good job, Lukas!
