Cleansing Conditioners…what’s with all the buzz?
Have you seen all of those infomercials for the WEN brand of cleansing conditioners? Supposedly, you can clean your hair using only these conditioners and no shampoo and of course the models in the infomercials have the most beautiful hair you’ve ever seen. I’ve always had some curiosity about the product but at $32 for a bottle, I wasn’t sure I wanted to risk it. I was imagining the product to be similar to a traditional conditioner and I just thought my hair would be left heavy and greasy.
Well, I’d seen a few advertisements recently for the L’Oreal brand of sulfate free cleansing conditioner and then there it was on the shelf at Target. Side Note: Target, what is it about you that makes me wander through all of your aisles picking up things I don’t really need but impulsively decide to get? Anyhow, my skin and hair tends to get extremely dry once Fall hits. With the heat running and dry air, I just feel itchy all over so I’m constantly using heavy moisturizers. I thought maybe the cleansing conditioner would be a good solution for my hair and scalp as it isn’t supposed to be as harsh and strip the natural oils so much. At about $6 for the bottle, I figured I could risk it.
I’ve been using the product for about the past week and I have to say I am quite impressed with the results. Day 1, I wasn’t sure. My hair looked and felt great but the roots didn’t seem 100% clean. After doing a little online research, I realized that that was because I applied the product the same way I do my traditional conditioner, starting at the ends. I also realized that I wasn’t using enough of it which is a little bit in the packagings fault. One pump doesn’t dispense much so you kind of assume that you don’t need too much.
Well, I’ve figured out that the best way to use it, is to use about 6 or more pumps of product and start at your scalp the same way you apply shampoo. It will work it’s way through to your ends. You work it into a low lather and you let it set for one to two minutes (during shave your legs time or something…multitask!). When you rinse the product out, your hair will feel so silky smooth and it actually feels clean too! Even after blow drying, my hair is not frizzy at all. I have long, straight, thin-stranded but thick in quantity kind of hair. It goes flat very easy. I do use a volumizing mouse for styling and definitely still need to do so while using the cleansing conditioner but the appearance and texture of my hair is much improved. Oh, and this products scent is wonderful!
My hair stylist has been telling me forever that washing every other day was way better for your hair and scalp but I could never get through a day of feeling greasy. Apparently your scalp won’t produce so much oil after awhile of not washing it quite so much. With this product, I actually think every other day might be possible. My hair does not feel as greasy by the next day…so, we shall see if I can change my habits!
After trying this product, I just might be willing to try other brands of the cleansing conditioners. Who knows, they might be even better and I do feel like I should give the “inventors” of the idea a little business. Have any of you tried the other brands?
