Well it’s a new year again and chances are you have once again decided to get in shape, shed extra pounds, tone up and eat better in the coming year. This year is your year, you are finally going to do it……Ok so this time, mean it!!! Don’t, just talk about it, don’t just pin pictures, workouts and meals on your Pinterest account and think they are great ideas actually DO IT!! Nike said it along time ago so follow through and succeed. Over the next few months I am going to give you some motivation and tips on how to stay on track with your goals this year so you don’t end up just trying for 6-12 weeks and then quitting whether you reach your goals or not you need to keep going!! Being healthy is not just a thing that you work towards for a few weeks or months and give up on; it is a LIFE LONG COMMITMENT TO YOU!!!! Everyone’s first mistake is not being specific with goals along with not making time for your health. Yes life is busy and full of commitments and obligations trust me I know! I am a full time working mom who has to schedule my workouts and if I skip them I am the only one to blame not my hectic life! Truth is working out and healthy eating is as simple as planning and scheduling even if you have to multitask to do it there is indeed time for healthy living.

The first step in this healthy, new lifestyle is finding a place to work out. By now you have either found a gym to join, walked in your gym that you haven’t stepped foot in for months or are still “shopping” gyms to find the right fit for you. Or maybe you are trying the in home approach and have purchased equipment which may or may not have been used yet. First thing I am going to say is if you haven’t actually started yet get up and do it and stop making excuses if you have started great job! CONGRATS it’s the first baby step of many that I am going to talk you through over the coming weeks and months.

The most important thing is finding what works for you, everyone is different some need the gym atmosphere, which every gym in town has a different club culture and what they offer varies! Between regular gyms, boot camps, studios for yoga, cross fit, women’s only clubs and all frills gyms there are enough choices to fit every need and personality, so pick the one that will give you success. Make sure you feel comfortable, safe, and welcomed! Never be made to feel like you are not welcome or do not fit in, everyone has goals and every one of them is different! Trainers and staff are there to help you reach your goals so always ask for help don’t be afraid or intimidated we do this job because we love to see the transformation not just physically but mentally that take place when people reach their goals. There is never a stupid question and you can’t always do it by yourself.

For those that prefer to workout at home make sure you take the time to learn the proper way to lift and do cardio, the only thing worse than not moving is doing it all wrong and either hurting yourself or not getting that heart rate up in order to improve your fitness. Remember to always push yourself but not punish yourself with your workouts. A key to at home workouts is making sure your equipment is not pushed in the corner; make sure it is in the way so you will not avoid it! Another tip, never ever hang stuff on cardio pieces, the second you do that you are setting yourself up to bury it within a few months always make it convenient to use. Come on everyone knows what I am talking about and has done it! I can say I did with my at home elliptical which is why I am now a die-hard gym person I need the atmosphere so I do not get side tracked with other obligations at home.

Bringing us to my second step! Planning and scheduling your workouts!! This step is something we say we will do, make time, but then we make excuses instead. The first thing you need to do is figure out a practical amount of times a week you will be able to work out. Don’t say Monday-Friday , don’t say every day or every other day, look at your life and obligations and figure out how many times you can actually fit it in with your life. While doing this realize you may need to get up early to do it, yes getting up at 5 am may seem ridiculous to you but if that is when you have time then make it happen. The habit is up to you to start and it will get easier after a week or so! Same thing with weekends just because it’s the weekend doesn’t mean you can’t workout. Workouts can be anywhere from 20-60 minutes so maybe twice a week you work out for 30 and once a week you work out 60 minutes realize you can fit it into your life without it being a problem. Now that you have scheduled time for you to be healthy follow it! Just because something else comes up doesn’t mean you skip your workout, you work around it! It is not something that should be erased it is something that is in pen and should be done just like work and dinner, and your kid’s basketball game. Maybe you shorten your workout; maybe you schedule dinner 30 minutes earlier or later. The point is your workouts are important and can change your life; your mood and your future so don’t treat them as options treat them as time for yourself that is needed.

Now that we have found a place and time for your healthy workouts the next thing I will go over will be setting specific goals and eating healthy and clean!! I am going to leave you with two things the first one is one of my favorite quotes, “Fitness is not about a crunch or a push up, it’s about taking your power back. So stop holding yourself back from what you are capable of being.” Secondly, a 1 hour workout is only 4% of your day! NO EXCUSES!!!
