“Painting Petroleum: Art in Energy Family Day at the YAM”

February 8, 2013

What do art and oil have in common here in Billings? Much more than what can be seen on a canvas. The Yellowstone Art Museum and local oil and gas companies are coming together for a good cause: to benefit children’s art education and to celebrate the energy industry.

On Saturday, February 9th from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the museum will open its doors with free admission, courtesy of Yellowstone County oil and gas companies, to host “Art in Energy Family Day”. An energy-focused children’s art activity—also free of charge—will take place from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

All Yellowstone County families can enjoy all the exhibitions the YAM has to offer, including the new Art Auction pieces, Uncommon Ground (an exhibition on loan from William I. Koch which feature’s Chief Joseph’s war shirt), as well as the Young Artists Gallery featuring Billings Public School’s 5th and 7th graders’ work, and Boundless Visions, the YAM’s permanent collection exhibition which features fun, interactive stations where children (and adults) can try their hands at watercolor, sketching, and much more—all free of charge. Yes–you’re actually encouraged to TOUCH something in a museum, and your children can do it on Saturday.

What’s better than taking the kiddos to visit all of this, free of charge? Perhaps dropping in on the free children’s art activity in the Education Studio, where kids will be able to exercise their own creativity (and burn some energy of their own) with re-purposed petroleum geology maps donated from the museum’s own Education Director of 18 years, Linda Ewert.

Art in Energy Family Day is sponsored by Kenneth Schlenker, G-Sun, LLC and local oil and gas companies. Interested in more adult-oriented art culture? It might be your best—and free–chance to see those coveted Art Auction items to cover bare walls in your home or office before they go to auction on March 2nd.
