When metal historians talk about the “big four” thrash metal bands (Anthrax, Slayer, Metallica, and Megadeth), some change it to the “big five” including the Brazilian band Sepultura as well. Formed in Brazil in 1984, an early lineup contained vocalist Wagner Lamounier, who later went on to front black metal titans Sarcófago. When Lamounier left, Cavalera took up vocals as well as guitar and Sepultura was born. The first album was the classic Morbid Visions, which established them as one of the foremost thrash bands on any continent, as well as an early band in the death metal vein. With the releases of Beneath the Remains and Arise, Sepultura gained a considerable American following, perhaps culminating in the classic Roots album, which saw them mixing thrash and death metal with traditional Brazilian instruments. However, following the record, Max Cavalera reportedly quit the band after an argument over management (his wife had been managing the band). Cavalera later went on to from the more commercially oriented band Soulfly, and Sepultura continued with new singer Derrick Green.
